Got an SM3 GPU? Please try this.

Miscellaneous Forums/General Help/Got an SM3 GPU? Please try this.

I want to see how this performs on a range of SM3 GPUs:
http://forum.leadwerks.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2904&p=25721#p25721

Please report FPS for both oldterrain.exe and newterrain.exe, as well as your GPU make and model. Thanks!

puki(Posted 1+ years ago) #2
I will test it soon (within the hour) - just in the middle of some action in X3.

nVidia 8800 GTX

Old terrain - 175
New terrain - 182

Amon(Posted 1+ years ago) #4
122 - 128 fps for old terrain. But It's just a black screen with what appears to be white outlines of a terrain jotted about.

132-139 fps for new terrain with the same issue as the old terrain. Screeen is black but for a few jotted terrain edges.

Using a PNY 9500GT 512: Don't know if it's SM3. Link to specs here on nvidia site: http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_9500gt_us.html

That's a SM4 card (which is better) - but not as good as my SM3 card.

puki(Posted 1+ years ago) #6
Wait a minute - my GTX must be a SM4 too.

Indeed - it was the first SM4 card - self-touch.

Amon(Posted 1+ years ago) #7
How can you tell? I've checked the specs and it doesn't state anything like that on the nvidia site or the PNY site.

Yeah your 8800GTX is faster considering it still costs over £100 yet my card is a budget £38.99 job from PC World. :)

Funny thing is 9500GT at under £40 is way faster than my 7950GX2 which died 4 months ago which cost £380 new some time ago.

puki(Posted 1+ years ago) #8
It will be listed as either 'Shader Model' or 'SM' - followed by the version number.

Gabriel(Posted 1+ years ago) #9
Puki's right, it's a Shader Model 4.0 card.

xlsior(Posted 1+ years ago) #10
My X1650XT is a shader model 3 card -- the oldterrain gives me a number between 45 and 47 in the corner, but visually the entire screen is just black with some grey smudges.

Newterrain immediately closes upon launch.

MadJack(Posted 1+ years ago) #11
For what it's worth;

80 fps old terrain
89 fps new terrain

In both cases the camera appears to be beneath the terrain with the new terrain appearing to be more vertically stretched then the 'old terrain'.

ATI 4850, driver v 6.14.10.6891
Winx XP Home
CPU Pentium D 3Ghz

I have a GeForce 9600GT (also reported by your log file as SM4) and have exactly the same problem as Amon (and xlsior by the sounds of it).

Nevertheless, reported FPS was ~140 for oldterrain and ~155 for newterrain.

JoshK(Posted 1+ years ago) #13
It doesn't matter what it looks like.

I am getting the same result on my ATI X1550. I'll have to send a report to ATI after some more testing.

JoshK(Posted 1+ years ago) #14
I overlooked something, and the speed increase on Nvidia SM4 cards is actually more like 17%. A 50% improvement resulted on ATI SM4 cards.

However, on SM3 cards, both NVidia and ATI, it was unusable, for different reasons. See my blog.

Thanks for testing.

GW(Posted 1+ years ago) #18
Old Terrain: 205
New Terrain: 235
Card=Gtx280
also: it looks like the camera is underneath the terrain because everything is black with few grey stripes with the normals angled away from the camera.

JoshK(Posted 1+ years ago) #19
I found out how to fix it for SM3 NVidia cards. Now to see what ATI says.

It doesn't matter what it looks like, I am just testing the rendering routine.

Dodo(Posted 1+ years ago) #20
Old Terrain: 68.5
New Terrain: 0.64
Card=Nvidia 6600GT (Driver 182.08)

JoshK(Posted 1+ years ago) #21
The NVidia SM3 problem can be fixed, and ATI is dropping support for their SM3 cards.

Perturbatio(Posted 1+ years ago) #22
I get 202 with old, 210 with new, same white lines on black screen issue. (I updated to the latest drivers just recently).

New = 220Fps

I have said a few times it is just a test, and it doesn't matter what appears onscreen. The camera is underneath the terrain.

JoshK(Posted 1+ years ago) #28
I got it working on my GEFOrce 7300, thanks for testing.

Sorry.
